What's the difference of the servers?

Post by champi »

I've noticed that E2 , although it gives me the highest ping by a large difference ( 225ms ) feels the most responsive , lags the least while E1 gives me 190 and it's borderline unplayable sometimes. I'd like to know the difference of the servers as said in the title or it's just placebo?

not really, I mean, yes they are different physical servers ("e1" is a AM4 based machine while "e2" is a AM3 based machine) located in different physical real locations ("e1" Dusseldorf and "e2" Karlsruhe) but at the end of the day the difference between both shouldn't be dramatic, both are more than capable servers for the task/s at hand. most likely the difference you notice has more to do with the routing and the distance than really the servers themselves which is among other things why I run various different servers. in addition to that you could probably try as well the "de" routes (located in Frankfurt) that work for both servers and see if you have more luck with those than the normal ones.

I use the interface of Quake 3 by loading unfreeze in mod menu to filter servers out , sometimes not every server loads. I understand now I mostly likely have some issue with E1 even though it gives me the lowest ping , thanks for answering , I'll test the others more and give feedback soon , maybe record a full game on each and compare.

you can always just connect directly with command if you want (ex. \connect fpsclasico.de:27961 gives UnFreeZe1 in alternative Frankfurt sub-par routing, 27962 UnFreeZe2, 27963 glacius and so on with all the rest of the servers). that's not the recommended connection, the recommended connections are the direct "e1"/"e2" ones, but in case of issue with those ones it can be worth at least trying. not every server showing on list refresh means that you have packet loss to these servers as it's to expect from a network distance in the tens of thousand of kilometres which is likely what might play a role on your experience (the ping doesn't really matter if half your packets get lost).

I have 2gbps optic fiber connection It's just my ISP goes to US(NYC) > UK and finally Europe ( i have to tracert again to confirm but i know going to US is what bloats my ping by a large margin , not the distance itself because nordvpn goes BR > SPAIN through oceanic cables. I'll be providing video data soon and post here.
